“What a place for a house. What a house for the place”
Country Life; September 1940

This dramatic Arts and Crafts house was designed by the current occupant’s grandfather and namesake, Detmar Jellings Blow, who was a leading architect of his day.

Detmar Jellings Blow, was “discovered’ by John Ruskin and he drove the cart carrying William Morris to his grave in Kelmscott, dressed in a wagoner’s smock with twisted wheat sheaves on the cart.

In more recent times Hilles House was the home of Detmar and his late wife, Isabella Blow, who is an icon in the international fashion world, muse of Phillip Treacy and credited with having discovered Alexander McQueen, Stella Tennant and Sophie Dahl. The house has entertained many successful people from the art, fashion, film and music worlds, as well as royalty.

“In may ways it’s a place of contradictions… imposing yet warm, theatrical though not grand, a house that nods to tradition and yet is highly original and innovative”

“You pass the Church, go down a steep narrow lane for five miles, through an unmarked break in the hedge. Finding Hilles in the dark is not possible without an escort, whose rear lights even so threaten at any moment to wink out of sight. Perhaps this is part of the plan; a Narnia scheme to disorient visitors, for life at Hilles, which stands rugged on a promontory overlooking the twinkling lights of Gloucester”
Vogue; November 1992

Hilles House is a spectacular location for filming and photography and has featured in documentaries, advertising campaigns and events including Asquascutum and Krug champagne. The house has also been covered recently by World of Interiors magazine, and in the past by Vogue, The New York Times and The Sunday Times.
